چکیده

A three-dimensional model has been developed for the investigation of the coupling of symmetric (TM01) and asymmetric (HEM11) modes in a high-power, high-efficiency traveling-wave amplifier. In the framework of a simplified model it is shown that the coupling between these two modes is determined by a single parameter that depends on the beam characteristics. For a specific set of parameters corresponding to operation at 35 GHz, simulations indicate that an initial HEM11 power of 0.5 MW at the input end is sufficient to deflect electrons to the wall. The build-up of this parasitic mode is investigated over many round trips of the wave in the structure and a threshold criterion for self-sustain oscillation is established. Finally a way for suppressing the HEM11 mode is analyzed.

The Interaction of Symmetric and Asymmetric Modes in a High-Power Traveling-Wave Amplifier

A three-dimensional (3-D) model has been developed for the investigation of the coupling of the lowest symmetric and asymmetric modes in a high-power, high-efficiency traveling-wave amplifier. We show that in a uniform structure and for an initially nonbunched beam, the interaction efficiency of the asymmetric mode may be much higher than that of the symmetric mode. It is also shown that the co...

Symmetric and Asymmetric Mode Interaction in High-Power Traveling Wave Amplifiers: Experiments and Theory

High-power microwave amplifier operation has been studied for use in a number of applications. The performance of the amplifiers has been marred, in some cases, by pulse shortening of the microwave signal. A possible source of the shortening is the loss of the beam due to hybrid HEM11 mode interaction with the beam. In this paper, we describe experiments which investigate high-power operation a...

A Comparative Study of Tooth Wear, Mechanical Power Losses and Efficiency in Normal and High Contact Ratio Asymmetric Spur Gears

The surface tooth wear which occurs at the gear contact region due to inadequate contact strength of the tooth is one of the predominant modes of gear failures. Currently, higher contact ratio spur gears are increasingly used in power transmission applications such as aircraft, wind turbine, automobiles and compact tracked vehicles due to their high load carrying capacity.  In this work, the di...

Non-linear modeling, analysis, design and simulation of a solid state power amplifier based on GaN technology for Ku band microwave application

A new non-linear method for design and analysis of solid state power amplifiers is presented and applied to an aluminum gallium nitride, gallium nitride (AlGaN-GaN) high electron-mobility transistor (HEMTs) on silicon-carbide (SiC) substrate for Ku band (12.4 13.6 GHz) applications. With combining output power of 8 transistors, maximum output power of 46.3 dBm (42.6 W), PAE of 43% and linear ga...

Sideband development in a high-power traveling-wave tube microwave amplifier

The work presented describes the characteristics of single stage and severed high-efficiency, high-power traveling-wave tube amplifiers operating in X band at 8.76 GHz. Average amplified output powers of 210 MW have been achieved at 24% efficiency. At high output power levels ( > 100 MW) sidebands develop increasing the average radiated power to over 400 MW with a microwave conversion efficienc...
